Creating Realistic Law Enforcement Characters


BEHIND THE BADGE: CREATING REALISTIC LAW ENFORCEMENT CHARACTERS is an interactive workshop that will dispel myths about FBI Special Agents, other federal agents, and police officers. The workshop includes writing exercises and question and answer sessions. Attendees will create two law enforcement character profiles and outline a scene that they can use in a short story or a novel.

About the Instructor

Alicia Hilton is an author, editor, arbitrator, law professor, actor, and former FBI Special Agent. She believes in angels and demons, magic, and monsters. Her work has appeared in Akashic Books, Best Asian Speculative Fiction, Cemetery Gates Media, Daily Science Fiction, MetaStellar, Neon, NonBinary Review, Unnerving, Vastarien, Year’s Best Hardcore Horror Volumes 4, 5 & 6, and elsewhere. She is a member of the Horror Writers Association, the Science Fiction and Fantasy Poetry Association, and the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers Association. She has worked with hundreds of authors, providing manuscript critiques and consulting services. Alicia received her BA in Sociology from the University of California, Berkeley, and her JD and MA from the University of Chicago. Alicia is an arbitrator with FINRA, the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, and an adjunct professor at the University of Illinois Chicago School of Law. She has been a guest speaker at more than sixty law schools, including Harvard, the University of Chicago, the University of Pennsylvania, Duke, Northwestern University, Cornell, Vanderbilt, and the University of Southern California. 

As an FBI Special Agent, Alicia was a member of a foreign counterintelligence squad and worked undercover in two long-term criminal cases. Her background as a law professor and former FBI Special Agent enables her to offer unique insights about law enforcement, the criminal justice system, and forensic science.
